GKNM Hospital Hosted Workshop on Safe Surgical Practices and Innovations in Intestinal Surgeries

The GKNM Hospital organized a workshop titled "Safe Surgical Practices & Innovations in Intestinal Surgeries" on 11th January 2026, in the GKD Auditorium. The inaugural session was under the support of Dr. Ragupathy Veluswamy, CEO, GKNM Hospital, focusing on safety and modernization in all aspects of gastrointestinal (GI) surgery.

The workshop, through various sessions led by experts and hands-on demonstrations, aimed to enhance knowledge of modern innovations in GI surgery for the benefit of surgeons, OT personnel, and medical practitioners.

Knowledge-Sharing Sessions

Dr. S. Vishnuvarthan, Consultant - General, Laparoscopic, and Robotic Surgeon, opened the sessions with "Principles of Safe Surgical Practices in GI Surgery," focusing on measures of patient safety and surgical efficiency.

Dr. Praveen Ravishankaran, Consultant - Surgical Oncology (Lap, Robotic & HIPEC Surgeon), presented the next talk, "Laparoscopy and Robotics in GI Surgery," with emphasis on the contribution of robotics in maximizing the surgical outcomes.

Ms. S. Bhuvaneswari, OT-In-charge, presented the "WHO Checklist on Infection Control and Asepsis in Theatres," stressing very feasible ways of minimizing infection risks during surgery.

After the tea break, Dr. N. P. Kamalesh, Chairperson, General Surgery, did an exhaustive session on "Harnessing Sutures/Staplers in GI Anastomosis," interspersed with an engaging video demonstration by the Medtronic Team featuring the latest devices and technological advances in GI surgery.

Dr. R. Venkatesan, a Consultant in Surgical Oncology, spoke next about "Managing Complications During GI Surgeries," and then the Ethicon Team presented on "Types of Suture and Suturing Techniques," focusing on advanced suturing methods to enhance patient outcomes.

Hands-On Skill Demonstrations

The afternoon session was entirely dedicated to practical skill stations for participants' rotation through multiple modules: GI

  1. Laparoscopy Instruments
  2. Robotic Instruments
  3. Advanced Devices: Staplers & Meshes
  4. Advanced Sutures
  5. Instrument Cleaning Techniques - taken by the 3M Team.

Conclusion

The workshop ended with feedback collection, distribution of certificates, and closing remarks, thus enriching the participants with enhanced skills, practical knowledge, and innovative techniques regarding intestinal surgeries.
