World Autism Awareness Day April 2nd
Supporting Every Child's Unique Journey
What is Autism?
Autism (or Autism Spectrum Disorder) is not an illness or a disease. It is a neurodevelopmental difference—a unique way the brain is "wired."
- A Spectrum: Every autistic person is unique, with their own set of strengths and challenges.
- A Different Perspective: It affects how a person communicates, interacts with others, and experiences the world around them.
- Lifelong Journey: Autism is something a person is born with and remains a part of who they are throughout their life.
Spot the Signs: Early Milestones Matter
While every child develops at their own pace, keep an eye out for these early signs in infants and toddlers:
Social & Communication:
- Limited or no eye contact.
- Not responding to their name by 12 months.
- Not using gestures like waving or pointing by 12-14 months.
- Preferring to play alone rather than with others.
Behavioural Patterns:
- Repeating certain movements (like hand-flapping or rocking).
- Lining up toys or getting very upset by minor changes in routine.
- Intense interest in specific topics or objects.
- Strong reactions to certain sounds, lights, or textures.
Why Act Early?
- Builds the Foundation: We focus on "Joint Attention"—the ability to share interest with others—which is the essential bridge to language and learning.
- Creates Connection: Early support helps children find joy in "social reciprocity" (back-and-forth play and smiles), strengthening the bond with their family.
- Develops Life Skills: By teaching communication and daily routines now, we give children the tools to navigate the world with more confidence and independence.
The Big Picture: Progress in autism is a journey where we build basic social connections first to unlock a child’s ability to communicate and learn. By matching support to a child’s stage of life, we empower families to turn small daily interactions into big long-term changes.
