Common Skin Changes During Pregnancy
Pregnancy affects many parts of your body, such as your skin. It is normal for your skin to change while you are pregnant.
In most cases, skin changes during pregnancy are not serious. They often go away when your baby is born.
What type of skin changes can happen during pregnancy?
Common skin changes during pregnancy may include:
- Your skin getting darker.
This is called hyperpigmentation. Your skin may get darker in patches on:
- Your nipples.
- Your genitals.
- Your face. This is called melasma.
- Linea nigra. This is a dark line that may stretch from your navel to your pubic area.
- Acne.
- Skin tags.
These are small flaps of skin that stick out from your body. Skin tags don't go away on their own. But they can be taken off by a healthcare provider.
- Moles that grow or get darker in colour.
Changes to skin problems that you had before pregnancy, such as:
- Atopic dermatitis.
- Psoriasis.
What actions can I take to manage or treat these skin changes?

You should also:
- Take your medicines only as instructed.
- Check with your healthcare provider before using any medicines, creams, or moisturising creams. Many medicines are not safe to use while you are pregnant.
- Limit time in the sun. This will help keep your skin from getting darker. When you must be outside:

- Wear a hat with a wide brim to protect your face.
- Use a gentle soap and a skin moisturiser. Ask your healthcare provider which ones are best to use.
