Cancer Runs in Families Too

Nov 10, 2025

When cancer strikes a family, it often brings not only medical challenges but also fear, uncertainty, and questions about the future. "Will this affect my children?" "Am I at risk too?" These are concerns many families silently carry.

While most cancers happen by chance, about 5-10% are hereditary. This means an altered gene, passed from parent to child, increases the risk of certain cancers. In such families, cancers may occur at a younger age or affect more than one member.

The Cancer Genetics Clinic at GKNM Hospital, Coimbatore, was set up to help families find answers. The clinic offers genetic testing, a simple but powerful tool that can show whether someone carries a cancer-related gene mutation. More importantly, it provides guidance and support -from regular check-ups and early screening to preventive strategies that safeguard both the individual and their loved ones.

You may benefit from genetic testing if:

  1.  Cancer was diagnosed at a young age (under 50 years).
  2. Two or more close relatives have the same or related cancers.
  3. A person has had two different primary cancers.
  4. A family member has had a rare cancer linked to inherited syndromes.
  5. A known genetic mutation has already been identified in the family.

Why this matters

Knowing your risk is not about living in fear-it's about living with confidence. Genetic testing can give families clarity, protect children and future generations, and allow doctors to detect cancers earlier, when treatment works best.
