Patient Education Material On Coronary Stents

Oct 13, 2025

Coronary stents are typically recommended for patients with coronary artery disease who have significant blockages in their arteries that are causing chest pain or heart attack, to restore blood flow to the heart muscle quickly.

Coronary stent is a small mesh tube placed in a blocked or narrowed heart artery. It helps to keep the artery open and improve blood flow.

Stents are designed to stay in your body permanently. You will not be able to feel the stent once it has been implanted in your artery.

Stents come in two main types: bare-metal stents which are simple metal mesh tubes, and drug-eluting stents which are coated with medication to prevent re-narrowing of the artery.

  1. Bare-Metal Stents are simple metal mesh tubes made of materials like stainless steel or cobalt- chromium. These are simple metal mesh tubes made of materials like stainless steel or cobalt- chromium. They provide structural support to the artery, keeping it open after a blockage is cleared. They don't have any medication coating. While effective, they can sometimes cause the artery to narrow again due to the body's response to the stent.
  2. Drug-Eluting Stents are coated with medication that is released slowly into the artery wall. The medication helps to prevent the artery from narrowing again by reducing scar tissue formation. These stents are generally preferred over bare metal stents because they reduce the risk of re-narrowing (restenosis).

Your Doctor will advice you on the most suitable stent for your condition. Sometimes more than 1 stent may be required if multiple blocked arteries are present.
