How to Recognise Dehydration in Children and Adults

Oct 20, 2026

Dehydration is when the body has less or no fluid intake than it consumes. A hot day in the sun, a heavy workout in the gym, and kids excited to play outdoors without frequent water breaks. All these can cause dehydration. Moderate dehydration can be resolved with intake of water or fluids, but severe dehydration can sometimes be fatal.

What are the causes and symptoms of dehydration?

For children,

  1. Dry tongue or lips
  2. No tears while crying
  3. Fewer or no wet diapers for hours
  4. Sunken eyes
  5. Patchy or itchy skin

For adults,

  1. Fatigue
  2. Dry mouth and cracked lips
  3. Dizziness
  4. Headache
  5. Muscle cramps

What are of the key measures to prevent dehydration?

For adults

  1. Drinking at least 6-8 glasses of water everyday
  2. Eat watery foods such as melons or cucumbers
  3. Avoid intake of sugary foods, soda, caffeine and alcohol
  4. Consume sports drinks or electrolytes after a heavy workout or sports activity
  5. Avoid peak sun exposure - seek shade or rest a while under well-conditioned spaces

For children,

  1. Encourage frequent hydration at home while playing in the hot sun and at school
  2. Include water-rich foods in their meals
  3. Avoid sugary foods and soda for kids
  4. When fallen sick, such as with vomiting or diarrhoea, give small amounts of ORS to restore the lost fluid for young children
  5. Continue breastfeeding for infants and feed toddlers with bland foods when sick

Conclusion

Forgetting to take a sip of water is something we all do very often. But making it a habit can lead to loss of fluid in the body and can cause dehydration. Make sure you and your children stay hydrated not only during summers but every day. Don’t miss making it a habit. Stay hydrated!
