The Department
of Cardiothoracic Surgery was Started in 1974 by Prof. V.Srinivasan
primarily performing Thoracic and closed procedures. A full fledged
open heart program came into being after Dr. S.Muralidharan
took over as the head in 1986. Since then this center has performed
more than 14,000 cardiothoracic procedures including 7000 open-heart
procedures. The center performs about 600 open heart procedures
every year.
Currently the center
functions from the new, state of art facility, the L.R.G. Naidu Institute
of Cardiology & Cardiothoracic Surgery. The center boasts of three
excellent operating suites and a 16 bed high tech intensive care unit, with a
dedicated team of doctors, nurses and perfusionists. The center is capable of
handling patients of all age groups.
The most frequently performed operations are coronary bypass surgery, surgery
for valve diseases and closure of holes in the heart. The mortality for these
procedures is less than 2% which is as good as the best centers in the world.
The center also has the experience
and expertise in performing newer procedures like Off-Pump Coronary bypass (OPCAB),
valve repair, valve replacement using biological valves, MAZE procedure for atrial
fibrillation, correction of complex congenital anomalies, Aortic diseases and
re-operations.
The center is recognised
by the Prime Minister's and Chief Minister's relief funds for financial aid to
poor patients needing heart surgery.
The center also
has a very active training program for doctors and nurses. The institute is recognised
by the National Board for training towards DNB in Cardiothoracic surgery.
