The first Intensive Cardiac care unit in Tamil Nadu outside the city of Chennai was established at GKNM Hospital in May 1974 . A dedicated cardiac institute , the Sri LRG Naidu Cardiac and Research Institute was inaugurated in GKNM Hospital on 20.11.79.
An experienced team of 7 adult Cardiologists, a Paediatric Cardiologist and an Electrophysiologist provide adult and paediatric patient care achieving excellent treatment outcome and enhanced quality of life.
Investigation modalities such as colour Doppler echo machines (with 3D and Tissue Doppler and transoesophageal capabilities), computerized treadmill systems and Holter recording units are available exclusively for the department. The department of Nuclear Medicine provides Nuclear cardiology services. The 256 slice multi slice CT at the department of Radiology can evaluate coronary arteries , aorta and other angiograms with the least radiation dose exposure .
A cardiac care ambulance service is available all through the year manned by qualified and trained personnel. The department trains and participates in the Code Blue team. A tobacco cessation counseling service is offered to patients. Quality indicators such as door to needle time for thrombolysis, readmissions into the ICU and hospital infection rates are monitored and analysed. Several clinical trials are ongoing in the department.
The department of Cardiology at GKNM Hospital is accredited by the National Board of Examinations for an intake of 2 candidates per year; affiliated to Indira Gandhi National Open University for Post Graduate Diploma in Clinical Cardiology for 10 candidates per year and affiliated to Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University for B.Sc Cardiac Technology for 5 candidates per year. An in house specialty training certificate course in Intensive Cardiac Nursing care is offered by the department to 10 Staff nurses per year.
The first Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory was established in GKNMH in 1989 with cine-angiographic equipment. At present three digital catheterisation laboratories with the latest flat panel detectors are in use. Over 800 cardiac catheterisation procedures are done every month and currently more than 50,000 cardiac catheterisation procedures have been performed .
The team performs a significant number of primary angioplasties for acute heart attacks round the clock on all days. They constitute 25-30% of coronary interventions. The Cardiology unit has the unique distinction of performing nearly 90-95% of Cath Lab procedures through the transradial approach. In fact the first transradial live workshop in South India was organised by this institution in July 2002 with Dr. Yuves Leuvard, Paris participating in the live workshop. This has served as a stimulus for many other centers to embark upon their individual transradial programs.
The Pediatric Cardiology program offers device closure of patent ductus arteriosus, atrial and ventricular septal defects. About 600 device closures have been done so far.
The Electrophysiology unit is one of the few centres in India offering comprehensive cardiac arrhythmia services and has taken the lead in providing the most modern cardiac arrhythmia care by installing a state-of-the-art, 3D mapping system. More than 500 Radiofrequency ablations have been done to cure arrhythmias.
